NORFOLK

Lake Taylor’s Wayne Davis, an Ohio State signee, was named Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year on Thursday.

Davis, a defensive back and wide receiver, is the first Norfolk player to win the honor.

Davis has played a key role for a Titans team that won the Group 4A state championship last season and plays Saturday in the 4A East Region championship game against Courtland on Saturday. Lake Taylor is 13-0 and has won 28 consecutive games.

“I can’t think of another player in my 17 years as head football coach more deserving of this award than Wayne,” Lake Taylor coach Hank Sawyer said. “He plays the game of football like it was invented to be played.”

Davis has been a playmaker on offense and defense this season. He leads the Titans with 30 receptions for 645 yards and six touchdowns and has returned five of his six interceptions for TDs.

Davis is the eighth South Hampton Roads player to win the Gatorade state honor, following Green Run’s Matt Darby (1986), Wilson’s Aaron Sparrow (1990), Princess Anne’s Kai Parham (2001), Western Branch’s Vince Hall (2002), Oscar Smith’s Phillip Sims (2009), Bayside’s Demetrious Nicholson (2010) and Oscar Smith’s Andrew Brown (2015).
